Sparkz - Back 2 Basics EP

Manchester born Sparkz started writing lyrics and producing his own tunes when he was just 15 years old.

In 2009 he won music competition "MCR Superstars" and was awarded the prize of travelling to New York to meet various hip hop artists and have the chance to work in the studio with them. He leaves next month.

Inspired by his win Sparkz began to work harder on music by improving his production skills and getting his hands on the microphone at nights in Manchester.

With hype building and his name appearing alongside the likes of Mouse Outfit, Broke n £nglish and Skittles he's ready to show you his combination of laid back productions and honest real life lyrics with his first free download. Big, big, big fans of Dub Phizix round here and his new single is released this week on Criticals sister label, Modulations.

On the A side "Break It" comes in hard with a growling bass line thats been devastating clubs for some time. On the flip Dub Phizix teams up with Skeptical to bring you "Four" an eyes down steppah which carries both of their unmistakeable sounds thrown into the mix.

Can't get enough of this stuff. Clean, deep and rolling tracks. I've said it before but the production is incredibly tight. Dub Phizix is clearly a man who loves his work.

This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

Computer Nostalgia

Something completely different now. I was incredibly obsessed with my ZX Spectrum in my very early teens. I used to display the games proudly alongside my music collection as they all used to fit on the same cassette storage rack. Looking at this website you realise that some of them had glorious cassette inlay artwork that was, in some cases, a million miles from how the game actually looked on your screen. Not that it actually mattered. Indulge.

Never Went To Blue Note

Yes, yes and YES! Ben UFO serves up a crisp selection paying homage to the now famous club where many caught their inspiration. Being only barely a teenager at the time (and being 150 miles away with no car) I was never able to venture there myself so this mix is pretty apt. Amazing that even though most of the tunes are 10 or so years old, production values and a recent revival in sounds created with ageing hardware mean the music is as clear, upfront and smooth as it's ever has been. The Boymerang remix of Ed Rush & Optical's track 'Technology' is a firm favourite in here.

On the 18th of April Ingredients Recordings, one of the fastest growing cutting edge drum and bass labels, will release "Out There" and "Athos" by Dub Phizix. A follow up to his collaboration with Skeptical released on the same label late last year.

Download the remix because frankly, its brilliant. The production on his work is incredible. This remix lies somewhere between familiar sounding D&B and some kind of futuristic vibe I'm not even onto yet. Larger than big.

Example Media launches Example Clothing

Manchester based media collective Example Media, responsible for Example Magazine, have launched a brand new clothing imprint aiming to support and promote upcoming and underground designer talent both from Manchester and the United Kingdom.

To kick thing's off Example Media founder James Mernagh has designed a simple yet striking piece entitled "Making An Example" available now in 3 colourways exclusively from the Example Clothing online shop.

In the coming months Example Magazine will begin to feature young designers / artists who will then be commissioned to design one or more T-Shirt designs for the Example Clothing range.

Each designer involved in the project will receive payment and extensive coverage online as a part of the Example Media collective.
